February 22, 1929 – June 22, 2017

Irma Josephine Benton, aged 88, died peacefully on June 22, 2017, after a difficult struggle with cancer. Her funeral mass will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 29th at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 401 S Parker Ave, Bryan, Texas, with Monsignor John A. McCaffrey presiding. A burial service will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Bryan.

Irma was born on February 22, 1929, in Rosenheim, Germany, the daughter of Georg and Josephine Strobl. In 1945, she met her future husband, US army sergeant Gene Benton, in her home town in Bavaria. Four years later, they married in a small chapel in the Alps and returned to Dallas where Gene was a political science professor at SMU. Eventually, they moved to Bryan/College Station and started a family. Irma worked as a librarian at Texas A&M University for 20 years, was a volunteer Sunday school teacher and an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Irma loved German music, dancing and the beautiful Bavarian mountains, making her adjustment to life in Texas difficult at first. However, she was very outgoing and early on joined the German Sängerbund (choral group) and later made many friends in her new home. Her Thursday German parties (or “Stammtisch”) brought its participants laughter and close friendships that have lasted more than 40 years. Throughout her struggle with cancer, Irma demonstrated a strong will to live and an unwavering faith in God. Her wit, loving heart and positive attitude will be remembered by all who knew her.

Irma is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Georg Strobl, Jr., and a long-time friend, Karl Unde. Irma leaves behind her two loving children, Cindy and Ron, and her granddaughter, Christiana as well as her nieces and nephews, Irma, Arthur, Robert and Monika.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to the Methodist Children’s Home in Waco, Texas, or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
