Helen Nicolas

Helen Louise Hopkins of Bryan, Texas went to see her Lord on January 21, 2018 at the young age of 89.
She was born on Sept 23, 1928 in Richmond Virginia to Ray and Isma Hopkins. She attended William and Mary College where she graduated with an English Degree. She was a military officer’s wife and raised six kids during WW II, Korea and Vietnam. After her husband retired, they returned to Texas. Although Virginia was her home, she loved Texas and the warmth of the people and the weather. Her skill knitting and sewing was a passion for her and she soon opened her own craft business and ran that business for 12 years before retiring to a life of music and worship.
She was a lifelong Presbyterian and faithfully attended services and worked with church services serving others. She was a long time member of the College Station Noon Lions Club where her favorite activity was working the July 4 celebrations and fireworks. She sang with the community choir Brazos Valley Chorale and her church choir until forced to retire because of health issues.
Even though she lost her sight after a stroke she continued to enjoy spending time listening to music and singing along with her favorite hymns and country music especially George Strait. Her last years she spent living with son Chris, daughter in law Wendy and Grandsons Thomas and Christopher (Peanut) making for good times all around.
Her favorite times of the year were fall football, Thanksgiving with all the kitchen chaos, Christmas with stockings she made hanging over the fireplace and Grans Egg Nog and the warmth of Texas in the spring and summer. She never lost her zeal for Aggie Sports and especially loved sitting on the back deck in springtime listening to Aggie Baseball with Dave South and enjoying a cold beer. With her son Chris grilling and Wendy and her grandkids playing in the yard with her best friend Winston the family Mastiff, it brought her joy to the heart.
She survived 3 husbands passing, a heart attack, diabetes, a stroke, blindness and dementia and still could smile with her sweet southern charm.
She is survived by her 6 kids and numerous grandchildren.
