Hazel Hearn Risch

1924--2017

Hazel Hearn Risch passed away on October 7 in Dallas, Texas, surrounded by her family. A fourth-generation Texan, she was born in 1924 in Bryan, Texas, to Robert and Deci Hearn. Her great-grandfather was Harvey Mitchell, who was instrumental in securing the location for Texas A&M University in Brazos County.

Hazel graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in Bryan as valedictorian in 1941, and earned a Bachelor in Business Administration with honors from the University of Texas in 1944.

She met her husband, Gail A. Risch, while he was an Army pilot and flight instructor at Bryan Field during WWII. They were married in 1946 and shared 40 happy years together until his death. Hazel and Gail were residents of Dallas since 1950 and had two daughters, Rebecca and Jennifer. Hazel was a loving and attentive wife, mother, and grandmother to her family. She chose to be a stay-at-home mother after the birth of her first child. She was admired by many for her keen intellect and business sense, which she applied to successful management of the Risch household.

Hazel was a member of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She lived in the Presbyterian Village North community for the last 11 years and was a member of the Presbyterian Village North Foundation.

Hazel was an avid football fan for the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Aggies. She maintained ties to Texas A&M her whole life and her daughters established an Endowed Century Club membership in her name several years ago.

Hazel was a member of Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas for many years and enjoyed playing golf there until age 89, when she thought she was getting too slow to be out on the course. She was a fan of crossword puzzles and Sudoku and completed one of each almost every day.

Hazel is predeceased by her husband Gail Risch, brother Robert Hearn Jr., and son-in-law Kevin McCormick. She is survived by her daughter Jennifer Risch and her daughter Rebecca McCormick Masse and husband Mike Masse. Her grandchildren are Stephen McCormick and wife Rebecca, Michael McCormick and wife Carolyn, Caitlin Masse Edmonds and husband Robert, and Andrew Masse. She also leaves a great-grandson, Angus McCormick.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 11 at 11:00 a.m. at Bryan City Cemetery in Bryan, and a memorial service will be held at a later date at Presbyterian Village North, 8600 Skyline Dr. in Dallas.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Presbyterian Village North Foundation, Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
