Filomena “Grandma Fil” Martinez Guzman passed away on November 10, 2017 at the age of 95.

Filomena, the daughter of Pablo Martinez, a field laborer, and Tanislada Hernandez Martinez, a homemaker, was born August 11, 1922 in Mercedes, Texas. One of ten children, Filomena grew up watching her brothers play baseball. She left school after the fourth grade, so she could help her mother with the other kids at home. She went on to work for a doctor by cleaning his home. She loved dancing and listening to music.

Filomena met Jose Maria Guzman and when she was 27, the two married and were blessed with 34 years together and eight children before Jose passed away on December 31, 1983. One of her best vacations was when they were able to travel across the US. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed cooking and sewing for her family. Her favorite times were when the family was able to get together. One of these times was when Filomena was able to go to the beach in Corpus Christi with her children. Even though she never went into the water, she enjoyed listening to the sound of the water as she napped. She loved when the family was together for her 90th birthday celebration.

Filomena was a devout Catholic and attended Santa Teresa Catholic Church. She was very strict in her faith and prayed the Rosary every day. She also enjoyed dancing all the way until she turned 90 and was no longer able.

Filomena leaves behind a large family: her daughter Elva Rodriguez, her daughter San Juanita Guzman, her daughter Elvira Garcia (Joe), her daughter Olga De La Cruz (Louis), her daughter Jovita Vargas, her daughter Ester Guzman (Roxanne), her daughter Marta Guzman (Cynthia), her daughter Rita Ramos (Manuel), 20 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren. Grandma Fil will be dearly missed.

To honor Filomena’s life, a visitation will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2017 from 5-8 PM at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan. Her Rosary will begin at 6:30 PM. Filomena’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 3350 Alameda Street in Corpus Christi at 11 AM on Monday, November 20, 2017 with interment to follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park.
