Dr Bennie Joe Camp Sr.

Dr. Bennie Joe Camp, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 19, 2018 in College Station, at the age of 90.

Bennie was born in Greenville, Texas on March 19, 1927 to George and Artie Jackson Camp. After graduating as valedictorian of Greenville High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce. In June of 1950, he married the love of his life Mary Melton in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Later that year the couple moved to College Station where Bennie enrolled at Texas A&M University and began working on a Master of Science, and in 1956 he completed his Doctoral degree in Biochemistry.

Throughout his life he was an active member, and later deacon, at First Baptist Church in Bryan. He enjoyed serving as Sunday School teacher to adult classes where he devoted countless hours preparing for each lesson. It brought him great joy to delve deeply into the true meaning of the day’s lesson, which he would then teach with an equivalent passion and dedication.

Following his retirement from the Texas A&M University, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1989, he continued working as owner and analytical chemist at Mega Lab, Inc., a business he operated for 25 years.

His survivors include his wife Mary Camp; son, Ben Camp and wife Sheri; daughter, Maggie Kruse and husband Dale; grandchildren, Courtney Ivey and husband Sam; Michael Camp and wife Becca; Grant James; Kristen Giles and husband James; Kennon Kruse and wife Kelli; Kayla West and husband Josh; along with seven great grandchildren Samantha Ivey, Micah Camp, Allyson and Audrey Giles, Griffyn and Mavyn West, and Brooklyn Kruse.

The Camp family would like to thank the kind and dedicated staff of Comfort Keepers who have assisted Bennie and Mary so sweetly and lovingly for 4 years.

To honor Bennie’s life, his family has planned a visitation from 5-7 PM on Monday, February 26, 2018 at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan. Retired Pastor John Free will officiate the memorial service beginning at 11 AM on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 also at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan. Interment to follow at College Station Memorial Cemetery.
